Christina Carrillo

About Cristina Carrillo

Cristina Carrillo was born in Chula Vista, California, but raised in the small beach town of Rosarito in Mexico. She is currently an adjunct counselor and professor at three Community Colleges across San Diego. Her mission is to serve and empower students from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented communities to succeed in their academic and life goals.

Cristina has worked in the community for over ten years. She started her journey as an educator in Juvenile Hall for about six years. Working with incarcerated youth woke a passion for working with an at-risk population in education. Through hard work and effort in 2009, she attained an Associate’s degree in Psychology at Southwestern College and transferred to San Diego State University. After graduating in 2011 with a Bachelor's in Psychology, Cristina continued her work with at-risk adolescents in non-profit organizations.

In 2012, Christina began the Community Based Block program, which is a Master’s degree in Education with an emphasis in Multicultural Counseling. This program opened a new world of ideas and empowered her to continue her journey in social justice and advocacy. In 2014, she had the opportunity to teach English as a Second Language students in South Korea. Cristina feels a very strong connection with ESL students since she is one! This experience added to her passion for teaching and working with students from diverse backgrounds. After a year abroad, she came back to the U.S. re-energized and ready to work. Today, Cristina is excited about working with students in the Grossmont College CalWORKs program and is looking forward to sharing experiences and guiding students through their own journey.
